Francophonie Month 2019
Every year, the Francophonie Month promotes French language across the world. Meetings with artists and writers, all over the globe, are organized, as well as conferences, workshops and performances which celebrate French language in its diversity.
In the United Arab Emirates, the essential role of diffusing and promoting the French language is assured by a tight-knit network shaped by the Institut français, department of culture and cooperation in the French Embassy, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, the French Alliances in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai and six French schools, as well as a great number of private schools based in the United Arab Emirates that consider the French language as a true added value on the educational market.
Welcoming the largest community of French and Francophone expatriates in Gulf countries, estimated at 300,000 native speakers, the United Arab Emirates has become a member of the OIF (The International Organization of Francophonie) on 24 October 2010 and have seen their status elevated to an associated member on 11 October 2018. France and the United Arab Emirates have signed a contract on 26 July 2018 to officialize the decision to progressively reintroduce the teaching of French in public Emirati schools.
On the occasion of the Francophonie festival, more than thirty events shall take place in the UAE, highlighting the influence of the French-speaking culture.
These events, on the initiative of embassies and consulates from the member or observer countries of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), promote French language and the value it carries across the world: friendship and dialogue among peoples, and cultural richness.
The Francophonie Month will also feature cinema festival “Francofilm” that celebrates French language with a selection of francophone movies.
