Installation “Patterns” by the artist Julien Poidevin
From November 21st to November 23rd, Abu Dhabi Art Fair, the international contemporary art fair, will host a production of the Institut français in the UAE / Cultural department of the French Embassy. “Patterns” is an immersive installation of the multimedia artist, Julien Poidevin, which combine new technologies and traditional patterns of Islamic art.
The general audience of Manarat Al Saadiyat will have the opportunity to discover this artwork until January 25th, 2020.
In the spirit of its previous collaboration with the artist Gregory Chatonsky in 2017, who mixed photography and virtual reality, the Institut français in the UAE decided to deepen the topic of Art and new technologies by inviting intermedia artist Julien Poidevin.
By using several techniques within the same creation, the artist works on the feelings and sensations experienced in direct connection with his works. With the installation “Patterns”, Julien Poidevin enquires our relationship to the past and questions our perception of traditional forms and patterns in urban space. Patterns will bring to life the geometric motifs that symbolize Islamic art by transforming them into sounds. This immersive multisensory and generative installation will simultaneously allow us to see and hear the complexity of these traditional patterns and embody the notions of infinity and transcendence thought by the surveyors of the 10th Century. Julien Poidevin declared : “This work gave me the opportunity to approach this notion of temporalities that are crossing each others, it is a work that potentially has neither beginning nor end, constantly changing and that unveils the beauty of the laying out of forms with the notion of time”. His greatest wish would be to reproduce this installation on an in-situ building.
H.E Ludovic Pouille, Ambassador of France to the UAE, declared: “The Institut français in the UAE and the French Embassy are thrilled to present this artwork in one of the most influent fairs of the region : Abu Dhabi Art. Julien Poidevin’s artwork is a bridge between past and future, and enables to have a new look on ancestral patterns, which are part of the landscape and History of the UAE and of the countries of the region. This installation, inspired by a work that is part of the Louvre Abu Dhabi collections, highlights the richness and ambition of the artistic collaborations carried out within the framework of the Emirati-French Cultural Dialogue.”
The commitment of the Institut français in the UAE with Abu Dhabi Art is one of the highlights of the cultural season of the Emirati-French Cultural Dialogue. This season will last until March 2020, two years after many fruitful cooperations between French and Emirati cultural institutions.
