The Alliance Française Abu Dhabi presents the comics exhibition Kubuni

March 18 to April 15

The Alliance Française Abu Dhabi is organizing, in partnership with the Institut Français and the Cité Internationale de la BD d’Angoulême, an exhibition as part of the month of La Francophonie: Kubuni, comics from Africa.s whose opening will take place on March 18, 2022.

About the exhibition:
The “Kubuni” (“imaginary creation” in Swahili) exhibition is the road map of comics in sub-Saharan Africa, taking shape around three main axes: yesterday-today-tomorrow. It will essentially bring together the works of more than 50 comic book authors from sub-Saharan Africa.

Joëlle Epée Mondengue, comic book author, promoter of the Bilili BD Festival and curator of the Kubuni exhibition, wants to show a plural, universal Africa, free from any Eurocentric prism, which is not limited to the borders of a country or a continent. She declares: “There is not an African comic, but comics of Africas.”

Whether they draw their inspiration from ancient graphic and narrative traditions or from today’s issues, all the artists presented offer a plural vision of the Continent, as evidenced in the title of the exhibition by the “s” affixed to ” Africa.s”.
