In June 2023, TotalEnergies and Institut Francais in the UAE will join forces to organize an exciting Youth Hackathon aimed at addressing the pressing need for solutions to improve the carbon footprint. This event will bring together 100 talented students from renowned universities such as Khalifa University, American University of Sharjah, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, Zayed University, UAE University, and School 42.

Building upon the tremendous success of the previous two editions, this year’s hackathon will empower students to explore innovative strategies to tackle the sustainability challenges of our modern world, within the favorable context of COP 28. Guided by experts from the Climate Fresk association, the participating students will have the opportunity to present their groundbreaking solutions to a distinguished jury. The team with the most comprehensive and impactful project will be honored during an awards ceremony, graced by the presence of His Excellency Nicolas Niemtchinow, the Ambassador of France to the United Arab Emirates.

At the core of this initiative lies the Climate Fresk association, which offers a collaborative, scientific, and creative game designed to deepen understanding of the climate system and the causes and consequences of its disruption. Developed by Cédric Ringenbach, the game prompts participants to unravel the cause-and-effect links between various factors and illustrate their insights through a collective fresco. Furthermore, the workshop encourages reflection on both individual and collective actions that can be implemented to combat climate change.

The Climate Fresk game comprises 42 cards, meticulously crafted based on reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Since its inception in 2018, the association has been dedicated to raising awareness about climate change, guided by the principles of humanism, respect for science, and collaboration with the corporate world. Through organizing workshops and training facilitators, Climate Fresk has successfully spread its innovative and scientifically grounded approach to understanding climate change, catering to diverse age groups ranging from children to adults. Present in 50 countries and translated into 35 languages, the association has already made significant global impact.

By bringing together the brightest minds, the Youth Hackathon aims to foster an environment of collaboration and creativity, enabling students to contribute their unique perspectives and innovative ideas towards mitigating the challenges posed by climate change.

And that’s a wrap for the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The closing ceremony, presided over by director Ruben Östlund, announced its winners among the 21 films presented in the official competition this year. Two French films made it to the winners’ list.

The closing ceremony of the 76th Cannes Film Festival took place on Saturday, May 27, and was broadcasted on France 2. It was hosted by Chiara Mastroianni.

The jury, chaired by director Ruben Östlund and comprised of director Maryam Touzani, actor Denis Ménochet, screenwriter and director Rungano Nyoni, actress and director Brie Larson, actor and director Paul Dano, writer Atiq Rahimi, director Damián Szifron, and director Julia Ducournau, announced its winners among the 21 films presented in the official competition this year.

The Palme d’Or went to “Anatomie d’une chute” (Anatomy of a Fall), which was presented on Sunday, May 21. Justine Triet directs the story of Sandra, accused of her husband’s murder, who died a year earlier in their isolated mountain home. Their visually impaired son witnesses the trial, where he sees his parents’ relationship dissected in public.

Justine Triet is the third woman (and the second French woman!) to receive a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Jane Campion won it in 1993 for “The Piano,” tied with director Chen Kaige, and Julia Ducournau, a member of this year’s jury, won it in 2021 for “Titane.”

The Palme d’Or was presented by the iconic actress Jane Fonda, a fervent feminist activist.

The Cannes Film Festival was honored by the exceptional presence of legendary filmmaker Roger Corman on Saturday, May 27, who presented the Grand Prix alongside virtuoso Quentin Tarantino.

Jonathan Glazer won the Grand Prix for his film “The Zone of Interest.” This was the first time the British director had been selected at Cannes.

“The Zone of Interest” tells the complicated love story between a Nazi officer and the wife of an Auschwitz extermination camp commander. The film, now a Palme d’Or recipient, was presented on Friday, May 19.

Pete Docter, the creative director of Pixar Studios, presented the Best Director award to Tran Anh Hung for “La Passion de Dodin Bouffant.” This film stars Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel in the kitchen. The director, Tran Anh Hung, chose them because they were a couple in real life and he wanted an intimacy on screen.

Tran Anh Hung had previously received the Caméra d’Or in 1993 for a film selected in the Un Certain Regard category.

Aki Kaurismäki took home the Jury Prize for “Les Feuilles Mortes” (The Dead Leaves). In this film, two lonely individuals, played by Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen, meet in Helsinki and decide to experience their first and last love together. Aki Kaurismäki had previously won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002 for “The Man Without a Past.”

May 16

The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 16 to May 27, 2023, at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes. The president of the jury will be Swedish director Ruben Östlund. The mistress of ceremonies will be French actress Chiara Mastroianni.

The festival was founded in 1939 based on an idea by Philippe Erlanger, submitted to Jean Zay, Minister of National Education and Fine Arts of the Popular Front, and Albert Sarraut, Minister of the Interior. The first planned edition, scheduled for September 1, 1939, was canceled due to the outbreak of World War II. The first edition of the festival eventually took place in 1946.

In addition to the official selection of the festival (films in and out of competition), several sections have been created over the years, including the Directors’ Fortnight, which became the Directors’ Fortnight of Filmmakers, the Cinéfondation, the Critics’ Week, and Un Certain Regard.

Originally a simple tourist and social event, the Cannes Film Festival has become over the years the most media-covered film festival in the world, especially during the opening ceremony and the red carpet walk: the red carpet and its twenty-four “steps of glory.”

Every year, during the second half of May, filmmakers, celebrities, film industry professionals (producers, distributors, international sales agents…), and thousands of journalists gather in Cannes. The main screenings take place at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès located on the Croisette promenade.

Today, the official selection aims to reflect the global film production. The competition generally highlights auteur cinema or films that are experimental in nature.

The 2023 edition will give prominence to French cinema!

The opening film will be a French film, as it will be the historical drama “Jeanne du Barry” directed by Maïwenn. Among the 19 films competing for the Palme d’Or, 4 are French:

  • “Anatomie d’une chute” (Anatomy of a Fall) by Justine Triet: After “Sibyl” in 2019, the director returns to competition. Her fourth feature film tells the story of a woman accused of her husband’s murder, with German actress Sandra Hüller in the lead role, who captured the Cannes audience in 2016 with “Toni Erdmann.”
  • “L’été dernier” (Last Summer) by Catherine Breillat: Ten years after her last film “Abuse of Weakness” and serious health problems, the provocative director focuses on a mother whose life takes a turn after an affair with her stepson.
  • “La passion de Dodin Bouffant” (The Passion of Dodin Bouffant) by Tran Anh Hung: A French-Vietnamese director who previously made “The Scent of Green Papaya” in the 90s, Tran Anh Hung adapts a novel about gastronomy, featuring Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel.
  • “Le retour” (The Return) by Catherine Corsini: Khedidja, a woman of African origin, goes to Corsica to take care of the children of a wealthy family. Her daughters, Jessica and Farah, accompany her. This is an opportunity for this family to revisit the island they left years ago following a tragedy.

In the Un Certain Regard section, there are also 4 French films:

  • “Le règne animal” (Animal Kingdom) by Thomas Cailley, which will open the section.
  • “Rien à perdre” (Nothing to Lose) by Stéphanie Deloget.
  • “Rosalie

The Night of Ideas 2023 event, organized by the Institut Français in the United Arab Emirates, will take place from May 31 to June 2, 2023. The event is divided into 3 parts, with the theme “More?” chosen to explore the modes of production and consumption, the major issues of demographic change, the acceleration and intensification of the world and lives. The event will start on May 31, with a workshop with French schools at Sorbonne Unversity Abu Dhabi. On June 1, there will be a morning session at the Sorbonne University AD, followed by a conference with experts on the subject of plastic.

The Pollution of plastic has become one of the six major environmental threats identified by the United Nations, calling for urgent global action. Every year, between 9 and 14 million tonnes of plastic waste are dumped into the world’s seas and oceans, more than 17 tonnes per minute, with devastating impacts on marine biodiversity, the fishing and tourism industries, human health, and the ability of the oceans to produce oxygen and trap the CO2 responsible for climate change. It also compromises the achievement of several of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), commitments adopted by UN member states to promote shared prosperity for all and protect the planet by 2030.

To address this issue, SeaCleaners, a non-profit environmental protection organization targeting marine plastic pollution, will intervene in French schools and universities in May 2023. The organization, founded in 2016 by the French-Swiss sailor Yvan Bourgnon, aims to clean the oceans, conduct scientific activities and raise awareness. During the event, SeaCleaners will present their solution, the Manta, to the students.

Veolia, another partner, will also participate in a conference during the event to present their solution, RECAPP, to tackle the problem of plastic waste. Veolia is a global leader in waste management, water and energy services. RECAPP is a platform that allows manufacturers, consumers and recyclers to collaborate, providing consumers with the right information on how to recycle their packaging, and also tracking the packaging’s journey through the recycling process. The goal is to make recycling easier and more efficient for all parties involved.

Aspiring designers and artisans from France and the UAE have been sent on international residencies and paired with mentors in the partner country

A touring exhibition starting from 17th March will feature the works created during the residencies

Subsequent editions of the arts exchange programme will see collaborations with different countries

The House of Artisans, managed by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and Institut Francais in the UAE, has launched a new cultural arts exchange programme – Crafting stories. This creative arts programme supports aspiring designers and artisans from both the UAE and France whose work is focused on craftsmanship. Launched in November of last year, the initiative aims to facilitate new French Emirati dialogues, support a local network of artisans and create long-term exchanges and opportunities for professionals in the arts and crafts space.

Taking place in both the UAE and France, the programme has sent the designers and artisans on residencies in the partner country, where they have been paired with mentors to help them develop their craft. The programme has allowed the participants to discover new creative processes, conduct in-depth research on a variety of techniques, and study the history of their craft and the ecosystem of the host country. Future editions of the arts exchange programme will see House of Artisans engage creative practitioners from different countries around the world.

Salama Al Shamsi, Acting Culture Sites Management Department Director at DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “We’re delighted to see this valuable artistic exchange programme come to life, and particularly proud to collaborate with our creative partners in France for this first edition, both further strengthening the long-standing cultural relationship between our two countries and paving the way for future international collaborations. This dialogue and exchange of knowledge and know-how between professionals not only contributes to the artistic growth of the artists who are part of the programme, but it also creates a network that will be immensely valuable to an ecosystem of cooperation that aims to protect and preserve the living heritage that these crafts represent.”

The programme features three Emirati artists and three French artists, who were chosen through a selection committee. The residency exchange saw Emirati artists Alia Al Mazrooei, Mohamed Al Suwaidi, and Sarah Al Nuaimi spend a month in France, while their French counterparts Jeremy Plisson, Joseph Dhedin and Domitille Lusinchi spent their time in the UAE.

Each participant was selected based on the crafts they master, under three main themes: woodworking and marquetry, weaving and textiles, and ceramics. The residency workshops took place across a number of locations within each country, including Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafrah region, Fujairah, Al Sila’a, Dubai and Ras Al Khaima in the UAE, and Paris, Limoges and St. Bussy St. Georges in France.

Hugo Henry-Ceylan, Head of the Cooperation Department of the French Embassy and Director of the Institut Français UAE, said: “We are really glad to launch such a successful programme. France and the UAE have a long heritage of craftsmanship, and this is a real opportunity to connect the two ecosystems and open up new opportunities for professionals, universities, craftsmen, and designers. We are proud to associate great institutions of excellence with this project, such as the National Institute of Arts and Crafts, Mobilier National, Boulle and Duperré universities, Manufacture de Sèvres, CRAFT Limoges and ARCA Ebénisterie, with the support of Institut Français Paris.”

The programme will result in a touring exhibition this March that showcases the work made by the artists during their time in France and the UAE, inspired by the theme of social gathering and art de vivre. It will also showcase highlights of their creative processes and their discoveries and reflections on the crafts of the host country.

“We are looking forward to seeing what the programme brings to the artists, both as a personal growth experience and its impact on their artistic expression,” Al Shamsi added.
